Select Figma canvas objects without a mouse on Mac

Option-Space activates Figma’s keyboard selection tool on Mac. In its box-selection workflow, move the pink cursor with Arrow keys and use Return to select an object. Escape leaves the tool. Selection modes have different controls, so inspect which mode is active.

Identify the selection mode before confirming

Figma describes box selection and structural pick selection. They are related workflows, but not every key means the same thing in both. In box selection, look for the pink cursor and position it deliberately. If the interface indicates pick selection instead, follow its hierarchy controls rather than assuming Return always performs the same final selection action.

Select the layer that matches the edit

A visible object may sit inside a frame, group or component. Inspect the selected layer and outline after confirming it, especially before applying a shared style or moving the object. Selecting a parent can include multiple children, while choosing a text child may affect only part of the design you intended to change.

Use a small scratch design to learn the cursor

Place or open a permitted practice design containing two clearly separated objects. Activate keyboard selection, move to one object, select it and leave the tool. Confirm its name in the Layers panel. Repeat with the other object before relying on the method in a dense production file where similar objects overlap.
