Insert objects in Figma using keyboard controls on Mac

In Figma’s documented Mac keyboard workflow, F6 can focus the toolbar. Choose a tool, inspect the crosshair and press Return to place the object. Arrow keys also pan the canvas while a tool is active. Not every object type or Figma product supports keyboard insertion.

English documentation and US-style key names. Punctuation and function keys can differ on other layouts.. These are documentation-backed defaults, not a hands-on test. App settings, operating-system shortcuts, extensions and keyboard layout can change what happens. Check focus and the current app menu or shortcut settings when a binding differs.

Choose the tool before choosing the position

A keyboard insertion workflow has two decisions: what to create and where it belongs. Use the toolbar or Actions to select the tool, then inspect the crosshair indicating placement on the canvas. Placing an object before verifying the tool and visible placement can leave an unexpected layer that later becomes difficult to distinguish from intentional content.

Respect the documented limits

The keyboard guide excludes objects that need multiple clicks, such as certain paths, connectors or tables. It also identifies Figma products where keyboard insertion is not available. Do not assume a method from Figma Design applies to every related product. If the expected control is absent, use the product’s supported visible workflow instead of repeatedly pressing Return.

Verify placement and document structure

Practice with a simple frame, shape or text object in a scratch file where you have edit permission. After placing it, inspect its location and the layer hierarchy. Rename meaningful objects through the app’s supported controls so later keyboard selection is understandable. A newly visible shape is only the beginning; its parent frame and intended purpose still need checking.
