Start from an intentional calendar and date

Before creating an event, check where you are in Calendar and which calendar should own the entry. A personal reminder and a shared work appointment should not be placed interchangeably. After starting the event, read its title, date and time fields rather than assuming that a newly opened editor has inferred exactly what you meant.

Move field by field and verify the result

Tab is useful for progressing through an open event’s controls; Shift-Tab returns to the previous field. This is an event-editor context, not a universal instruction to select the next appointment in every part of the window. Inspect the focused field before typing a date, a time or a title. Closing the editor with Return or Escape should be followed by a check of the visible event details.

Rehearse with a disposable appointment

Create an event called Calendar practice in a calendar you can edit. Enter a clearly recognizable time, move through several fields, and close the editor. Select the event again, open editing with Command-E, and compare what was saved. Remove the practice event through the interface when finished. If editing controls are unavailable, check whether the selected calendar or event permits changes before trying another shortcut.
