Decide whether you know a place or a phrase

If you know a channel name, the conversation switcher is often more direct than message search. If you remember words from a discussion, choose the search scope that fits the question. Searching the current conversation is useful for a decision made there; searching more broadly helps when you do not know which conversation contains it.

Read the result as a message in context

A search hit may quote an older decision, reference a different project or belong to a thread with a later correction. Open the relevant conversation and read surrounding messages before using the result. Check its date and participants, especially when answering someone based on a message found outside the channel you are currently viewing.

Use a narrow practice question

Try finding a non-sensitive phrase in a channel you can access, then repeat from a wider search. Compare the scope shown in the interface and the returned conversation names. A shortcut does not expand your Slack permissions or search material you cannot access. If the expected result is missing, verify spelling and scope before changing the query repeatedly.
