Review unread Slack messages with the keyboard on Mac

Command-Shift-A opens Slack’s unread view on Mac. Option-Shift-Up Arrow and Down Arrow move between unread conversations. Escape marks messages read in context; Shift-Escape marks all messages read, so use it deliberately.

Separate reading from clearing indicators

Unread markers are a way of keeping your place, not proof that a message has been understood. Review the conversation before marking it read. The all-read command has a wider effect than a local Escape action, so it should be an intentional end-of-review step rather than a way to dismiss an inconvenient screen.

Follow threads when the summary is incomplete

An unread channel message may be the start of a discussion rather than its final answer. Open the relevant thread and read the replies when a decision or handoff depends on them. Moving between unread conversations is useful for triage, but it does not replace checking a message’s full context before acting.

Try the smallest meaningful review

Use the unread view to inspect a small, familiar set first. Notice which group or conversation is selected before pressing Escape. Slack also uses Escape to dismiss interface elements, so focus matters. If you need to preserve an item for later work, choose the appropriate save or reminder action instead of relying only on its unread badge.
