Open and mute Slack huddles on Mac

Slack documents Command-Shift-H for starting, joining, leaving or ending a huddle on Mac, depending on context. Command-Shift-Space toggles huddle mute. Check the visible huddle state before pressing a command that can affect a conversation.

Read the call state before the shortcut

The same huddle command can perform different lifecycle actions. Starting or joining is different from leaving or ending, so identify the conversation and current state first. Do not treat this as a harmless open-panel shortcut when you are already in a call. If uncertain, use the clearly labelled visible huddle control.

Confirm mute with the microphone indicator

A mute toggle reverses the current state. It is not an instruction that always produces muted audio. Look at the microphone indicator after pressing it, especially before discussing private information nearby. macOS microphone permission, selected input device and the huddle’s audio controls are separate from whether the shortcut was recognized.

Avoid testing calls on other people

Learn the keys from Slack’s own help or inspect the visible controls before practicing. If you arrange a test huddle, make its purpose clear to the participants and confirm which conversation hosts it. This guide is a reference for deliberate controls; reading or highlighting a shortcut on this website does not start a huddle or change your microphone.
