Search across an Obsidian vault on Mac

Command-Shift-F opens Obsidian’s vault Search on Mac when the core plugin is enabled. Use plain words or supported operators such as path: and file: to narrow results. Command-O is for finding notes by name, not the same search.

Choose the scope before refining words

A vault is the boundary for this search. It is not a simultaneous search of every vault or every file on the Mac. Start with a distinctive term from the note’s content, then inspect the results and their paths. If you know the note title rather than its wording, the Quick switcher may be the clearer starting point.

Narrow a crowded result set

For a project folder, add a path condition rather than adding unrelated words until the results disappear. Search operators are text entered in the search field, not extra keyboard chords. Quotation marks can make a phrase more specific. Read the resulting context to distinguish a real decision from a passing mention in a template or historical note.

Investigate missing material carefully

Excluded-file settings can remove items from Search results, and not every local file is searched as note content. Check the vault, path, query and exclusions before creating a duplicate note. Try a harmless phrase from a note you can already open, then add one narrowing condition at a time so you can see which change affected the result.
