Delete words or a line safely in Obsidian on Mac
Obsidian documents Option-Backspace for deleting the previous word on Mac, Command-Backspace for deleting to the line’s beginning, and Command-Shift-K for deleting the current line when no text is selected. Command-Z undoes a recent change.

- Scope
- Obsidian · Obsidian desktop on macOS; core-plugin requirements are identified. Documentation checked 4 November 2026.
- Keyboard and customization
- English documentation and US-style key names. Punctuation and function keys can differ on other layouts.. These are documentation-backed defaults, not a hands-on test. App settings, operating-system shortcuts, extensions and keyboard layout can change what happens. Check focus and the current app menu or shortcut settings when a binding differs.

Match deletion to the visible caret
Deleting a previous word is smaller than deleting everything back to a line boundary. Read the caret position and the current selection before choosing. On a Mac keyboard, the backward-deleting key is commonly labelled Delete; Obsidian’s documentation calls it Backspace to distinguish it from a forward-delete key.
Check structural Markdown after a line deletion
A line can be a heading, task, list item or part of a longer structure. Removing it may change the surrounding note beyond the words themselves. Inspect the next and previous lines after the command, especially around nested lists or code fences. If the result is not what you intended, undo before making additional changes.
Build confidence on disposable text
Use a scratch paragraph with three clearly different lines. Delete a word, undo, then test deleting back to the line’s beginning. Try the current-line command only with no selected text and confirm which line disappeared. These are editor operations, not file-deletion shortcuts; deleting note text does not mean moving the note file to the system Trash.
