Know whether the next step is a build or another slide
A slide can contain several builds, so a single advance does not always move to the next thumbnail. During rehearsal, count through the visible sequence and check where each keypress takes you. If you want to move without a build animation, use the documented modified command deliberately. Do not assume that every presentation has the same relationship between one arrow press and one new slide.
Use the slide switcher for a deliberate destination
When a question calls for an earlier or later slide, a numbered jump can be clearer than stepping through many intervening slides. Apple documents typing a slide number to open the switcher and Return to go to its current selection. Inspect the destination before confirming. Escape closes the switcher, while in ordinary playback it can also end the presentation, so pay attention to the active interface.
Rehearse a question-and-answer detour
Make a short deck with a harmless build on one slide and a numbered appendix. Start playback, advance through the build, then use the slide switcher to reach the appendix. Practice returning to the planned sequence. The goal is to know what the audience will see during a detour, not to memorize slide numbers that will become wrong as soon as you rearrange the deck.
