Choose a pause that supports the conversation
A pause can give the audience time to ask a question without the current slide continuing to dominate attention. Black and white screens are different visual choices; consider the room and display before choosing one. These are playback shortcuts, not ordinary editing commands. Make sure you are actually presenting before pressing a bare letter and expecting the screen to change.
Do not confuse pausing with quitting
Ending presentation mode returns you to an editing or other application context, while pausing is part of controlling playback. Before an important session, rehearse how to continue after each pause state in your current Keynote version. Apple’s shortcut table documents the available pause commands, but a practice run is the place to confirm the exact visual behavior on your own display arrangement.
Try the audience view before the real talk
Use a disposable slide with a short heading. Start playback, pause, then test a black-screen pause and a white-screen pause in turn. Resume through the interface and verify that you remain in the intended place in the presentation. Finally end playback deliberately. This exercise is about predictable audience experience; it does not require experimenting with these controls for the first time in front of a live audience.
