Select content before changing its appearance

For a report, bold a short label when it needs emphasis and use paragraph styles for the document’s larger structure. Inspect the selected range before applying a text shortcut. Formatting the wrong range can make a whole paragraph look like a heading or leave only part of a label emphasized. The keyboard command does not understand the semantic role you intended for the text.

Choose between pasted content and pasted style

When importing a quotation or draft passage, matching the destination style can avoid carrying a different font treatment into the document. Copying and pasting a paragraph style is a different task: it transfers formatting from an existing paragraph. Decide whether the problem is the content’s appearance or the content itself, then use the relevant command. Review the result before applying the change across a longer document.

Compare two short sample paragraphs

Make two paragraphs with visibly different formatting. Copy a short passage from one, paste it into the other using match style, and inspect how it fits. Separately copy a paragraph’s style and apply that style to another paragraph. Keep this experiment small so you can compare before and after. It is easier to learn the distinction here than after importing several pages of inconsistently formatted text.
