Recognize a block selection first

A text selection covers characters; a block selection covers an entire Notion content unit and may include nested items. Before duplicating or moving, inspect the selected boundaries. This matters for a heading with child content: changing its position can affect more material than the single line you initially noticed.

Use duplication for a meaningful repeated structure

A small checklist or meeting template can be duplicated and edited into a new instance. Rename or revise the copied content immediately so it does not remain an indistinguishable second version. Moving blocks is more appropriate when you want one item in a new position, rather than two copies that can later diverge.

Try the operation on disposable content

Create a harmless paragraph or use an approved practice page, select its block and duplicate it once. Move the copy and return to editing. Confirm the surrounding order before doing the same in a shared document. Keyboard commands do not remove workspace permissions, and a shortcut being available does not mean every collaborator expects the structure to change.
