Give a chain of notes a clear starting point

A project index can link to planning, meeting and delivery notes. When following one of those links, notice the title you arrived at before editing. A link is navigation between notes, not a command to merge their contents. Keep the index understandable enough that you can find the same destination again without reconstructing a long browsing path.

Separate editor focus from navigation focus

Apple documents Return as the way to begin editing a note selected in the list or gallery, placing the insertion point at its end. Command-Return returns to the list. Tab navigation between the sidebar, notes list and search field does not work the same way while you are editing a note’s contents. If Tab is not navigating as expected, first leave the editor deliberately.

Practice a round trip

Open an index note containing a link to another practice note, follow it, and use the return navigation command. Next select a note in the list, press Return to edit, then Command-Return to return to the list. Finally bring the main window forward if a separate note window is covering it. This routine checks your location and focus rather than assuming all arrows or tabs always mean the same thing.
