Search when the message content is your best clue

If you remember an address, project name or a distinctive phrase, use search rather than stepping through every conversation. Examine the participant and surrounding discussion before assuming a matching word identifies the correct message. A common phrase can appear in several unrelated chats. Keep the exact person and topic in mind, particularly when search results contain similar group names.

Use next and previous for nearby conversations

Conversation switching is useful when alternating between a small number of ongoing discussions. It is not a command to move the insertion point within the message you are writing. After switching, read the conversation heading before typing. If you are comparing information from two chats, keep a deliberate return path rather than trusting that the next conversation will always be the one you expected.

Check focus without sending a message

Select a known harmless conversation, move to the next one, then return with the previous-conversation shortcut. Open search and look for a distinctive phrase from one of the chats, then inspect its context. Leave any composer empty during this practice. The useful habit is checking the destination before writing, which helps prevent a correct piece of text from being sent to the wrong discussion.
