Run a VS Code build task after checking what it executes
Shift-Command-B invokes Run Build Task. A task is executable configuration, so inspect the selected task and workspace before running it.
- Scope
- Visual Studio Code · Current vendor documentation checked 3 November 2026; no running-app compatibility test is claimed.
- Keyboard and customization
- Documented Mac defaults; punctuation and function keys depend on keyboard layout and hardware.. User bindings, app versions, focused controls and installed extensions can change a command. Inspect the active app menu or its shortcut editor when a listed combination differs.
- Review basis
- Documentation reviewed 2026-11-03 by Codex — primary-documentation and editorial review; no hands-on runtime test. These bindings were not tested in a running app for this guide.
Read the task definition first
A build task can run a compiler, script or other tool. In a familiar repository, check that the selected task is the intended one; in an unfamiliar workspace, inspect the configuration and trust context before executing it. A command named build is not a guarantee that it has no side effects outside generated output.
Interpret output rather than the shortcut itself
Pressing the combination starts the task-selection or execution flow. Read the task result, terminal output and exit status before saying the project built successfully. A task can fail before compilation, wait for input or continue as a background process, so returning to the editor is not proof of completion.
Keep repeatable validation visible
Once the intended task is known, record which task and configuration you used when sharing results with teammates. If several build variants exist, use names that distinguish them. The keyboard shortcut makes a known operation easier to reach; it does not replace the need for clear task definitions and actual output checks.
