Choose movement or recovery

Use adjacent-tab movement when you know which direction to go. Reopening is a recovery action after closing, rather than a way to navigate existing tabs.

Avoid closing the wrong page

Look at the active tab before Command-W. If you close a tab by mistake, stop closing more tabs and use the reopen command so the most recent closure remains the one you want.

Recover one closure before changing the history

Suppose a research window has an article, a search page and a form. Move between the open tabs without closing them until you have identified which one is expendable. If the article closes accidentally, reopen it immediately and check its contents before closing another tab. A reopened page may still depend on the website restoring its own state; the shortcut is not a guarantee that unsent form text or a logged-in session will be recovered. Keep consequential drafts in the website’s supported save mechanism rather than relying on tab recovery.
