Use positions for a small stable working set

Numbered navigation is useful when a few tabs occupy familiar positions. It becomes less predictable after moving, opening or closing tabs. Keep an eye on the tab order before relying on a remembered number, and use another navigation method when the target is not in the numbered range.

Remember the special last-tab case

The last-tab shortcut is useful when a recently opened reference appears at the far end of a window’s tabs. Its meaning changes as the collection changes. Treat it as a positional command rather than assigning it permanently to a particular website or assuming that it always means a literal ninth tab.

Practise with distinct page titles

Open a few harmless pages with recognisable titles, select the first and second positions, then select the last tab. Reorder one tab and repeat. This makes the relationship between the shortcut and the current order visible, so you are less likely to perform an action in a tab that moved unexpectedly.
