Open a typed Safari address in the current or a new tab

After entering an address in Safari’s Smart Search field, Return navigates; Command-Return opens it in a new tab and Shift-Command-Return also activates that tab.

Choose the destination before submitting

The same typed address can replace the current page or become a separate tab. Decide whether you need to preserve the current page before submitting the field. This is especially useful when comparing a reference page with another source: keeping the original tab avoids an unnecessary back-navigation trip later.

Distinguish field input from page input

These combinations apply after typing in Safari’s Smart Search field. A text box inside a website is a different context and can interpret Return or modifiers differently. Check where the insertion point is, and do not assume that a keyboard combination aimed at the address field will safely perform the same action in an online form.

Practise with a harmless destination

Use a public information page rather than a form containing unsaved work. Open a second address in a background tab, then repeat with the foreground variant. Compare which tab is active and whether the original page remains. The exercise is about controlling browsing context, not collecting more tabs than you need.
