Return to a Safari starting point without retracing every page
Shift-Command-H goes to Safari’s configured homepage. Back returns to the preceding page instead, so choose the route that matches your intention.

Use a named starting point
A homepage is a configured destination. It is useful when you want to return to the same starting location after following several links. Before relying on the shortcut, check what Safari is configured to use as its homepage; another person’s setup or an older guide may describe a different destination.
Do not confuse home with an empty tab
A homepage, the Start Page and a newly opened tab are not necessarily the same view. Their behaviour depends on Safari settings. If your goal is to preserve the current research trail, use a new tab or another window rather than replacing the current page with an assumed starting point.
Keep history navigation available
Use Back when you only need the immediately preceding page, and use the homepage shortcut when you intentionally want the configured starting destination. Practise on ordinary information pages, then inspect Safari settings if the home command leads somewhere unexpected. This avoids turning a settings difference into repeated unnecessary navigation.
Documented commands for this workflow
Scroll the table sideways to see every column.
