Confirm that Web Inspector has focus

A browser page and its inspector are separate keyboard contexts. The page’s own Find command searches rendered content, while an inspector search operates on development resources or the focused source view. Click or focus the relevant inspector area before interpreting the results, and identify whether you need visible page text or underlying resource text.

Choose local or resource-wide search

Start in the focused resource when you already know which file matters. Use the broader search when you need to locate a string across loaded resources. A missing result can reflect what has been loaded or what the inspector exposes, rather than proving that the server-side application does not contain the string.

Keep inspection separate from changing a website

Searching resources is a reading task. Console commands, DOM edits and network operations can have different effects and should not be run just because the inspector is open. Use a public test page when learning the search controls, and avoid sharing screenshots that include private tokens, addresses or application data.
