Copy from a Preview PDF and check the print context

Check what is selected

Preview can work with text and image areas, and copying depends on that selection. Before pasting somewhere else, confirm whether you selected the intended words or an area of the document. A scanned PDF may not behave like a PDF containing selectable text, and an empty selection is not evidence that the keyboard shortcut itself is broken.

Inspect the current document before printing

A window containing several items can make it easy to reach the print command while another document is selected. Check the filename, page range and print preview before committing paper or a PDF export. The shortcut opens the print workflow; it does not select a universally correct set of print options.

Separate saving from copying

Copying transfers the selected content; saving records changes to the open file. If you have annotated a document, inspect its save state independently of whether a copy operation succeeded. Use non-sensitive sample material when practising copy-and-paste so you can inspect the result without exposing private document content.
