Choose the structural unit before changing the table

A cell, a complete row and a complete column are different selections. Before a structural edit, identify which records or fields you are changing. Adding a row to a contact table is not the same as adding a field for every contact. Inspect the headers and current selection so that the insertion happens in the intended part of the table.

Distinguish deleting a structure from clearing a value

Apple documents separate commands for deleting rows and columns, while Delete can remove selected cell contents or a selected table depending on context. Read the selection carefully before acting. A useful precaution is to save or duplicate important work before reorganizing a substantial table, then check formulas and headers after the edit rather than assuming structural changes are isolated to visible values.

Test one insertion in each direction

In a disposable table, select a middle cell and insert a row above, a row below, and a column to either side one at a time. Label the new structures so you can see where each went. Then select a known practice row or column and delete only that structure. Inspect the final table dimensions before using the same commands on a real budget or tracker.
