Keyboard shortcuts for this task
| Action | Keys | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Archive selection | Control-Command-A | Acts on selected emails; inspect selection and your account’s mailbox arrangement. Source ↗ |
| Mark read or unread | Shift-Command-U | Toggles reading state; it is not a due date or a reply reminder. Source ↗ |
| Toggle mailbox filter | Command-L | Changes the current mailbox’s filtered view, not the contents of each message. Source ↗ |
Separate three inbox decisions
Archiving changes where a message is kept, marking unread changes its reading state, and filtering changes which messages you are viewing. These operations are not interchangeable. For example, an email you have read may still need a reply, while an unread notification may not require action. Choose the operation based on the purpose of your inbox rather than treating unread status as the only task list.
Inspect selection before a mailbox action
Check whether one message or several messages are selected before archiving or changing read state. Then look at the current mailbox and the filter control. A filtered view can make a message disappear from view without deleting it. When an email seems to have vanished after a shortcut, check the viewing conditions and destination before repeating actions or assuming the message has been lost.
Make a repeatable inbox pass
Try a disposable message you can identify easily. Toggle its read state, enable the mailbox filter, and observe whether it is included in the visible set. Turn the filter off, then archive the selected practice message and locate it through the mailbox interface. This separates a change to the message from a change to the view and gives you a recovery route before a larger cleanup.
