Switch Mac apps without losing the window you need
Use Command-Tab to change apps and Command-` to cycle windows within an app. They solve different navigation problems.
- Scope
- macOS · Current vendor documentation checked 3 November 2026; no running-app compatibility test is claimed.
- Keyboard and customization
- Documented Mac defaults; punctuation and function keys depend on keyboard layout and hardware.. User bindings, app versions, focused controls and installed extensions can change a command. Inspect the active app menu or its shortcut editor when a listed combination differs.
- Review basis
- Documentation reviewed 2026-11-03 by Codex — primary-documentation and editorial review; no hands-on runtime test. These bindings were not tested in a running app for this guide.
Decide whether the destination is an app or a window
When Safari and a writing app are open, the app switcher is the direct route between them. When two documents belong to the same app, keep that app active and cycle its windows instead. Name the destination before pressing keys: changing the application is not the same operation as finding a particular document window.
Use hiding deliberately
Hiding is useful when an app is obscuring the workspace but should keep running. It is different from closing a document and different again from quitting the application. Before hiding everything else, make sure the app you want to keep visible is already in front; otherwise the resulting workspace can look unexpectedly empty.
Practise a reversible route
Open two harmless windows in one app and one window in another. Switch to the other app, return, and cycle the first pair. Finish in the original window without closing anything. This separates the two movements and gives you a way to recognise whether a failed shortcut is actually a mistaken choice of destination.
Documented commands for this workflow
Scroll the table sideways to see every column.
| Action | Keys | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Change active app | Command-Tab | Moves through the application switcher, rather than the current app’s document windows. ↗ |
| Cycle app windows | Command-` | Uses the backtick key; keyboard layout can affect where that key is located. ↗ |
| Hide current app | Command-H | Leaves the application running and hides its windows. ↗ |
| Hide other apps | Option-Command-H | Keeps the front app visible; verify which app is active first. ↗ |
