Open, save and search a Mac document from the keyboard

Command-O opens a document, Command-S saves and Command-F searches the front document or window in apps supporting these standard commands.

Scope
macOS · Current vendor documentation checked 3 November 2026; no running-app compatibility test is claimed.
Keyboard and customization
Documented Mac defaults; punctuation and function keys depend on keyboard layout and hardware.. User bindings, app versions, focused controls and installed extensions can change a command. Inspect the active app menu or its shortcut editor when a listed combination differs.
Review basis
Documentation reviewed 2026-11-03 by Codex — primary-documentation and editorial review; no hands-on runtime test. These bindings were not tested in a running app for this guide.

Use the document lifecycle as a sequence

Begin by opening a known file and checking its window title. Make a small intentional change, save it, and then search for a word in the document. The three combinations are related by the work you are doing, but they are not interchangeable: opening chooses a file, saving records a change and finding moves within content.

Watch for a dialog instead of assuming completion

The first save of a new document can require a name and location. An Open dialog can require choosing a file before anything changes in the editor. After pressing a shortcut, look for the next control the app presents; repeatedly pressing the same combination is not a substitute for completing the dialog.

Keep app-specific save behaviour visible

Autosave, document duplication and Save As vary between applications. Do not infer a Save As shortcut from a different app’s menu or from an older cheat sheet. Use the File menu to confirm the available action before replacing a file, and use a separate copy when practising a save workflow.
