Use document zoom or accessibility screen zoom on Mac
Document zoom changes an app’s content view; accessibility Zoom magnifies the display and must be enabled in macOS settings first.
- Scope
- macOS · Current vendor documentation checked 3 November 2026; no running-app compatibility test is claimed.
- Keyboard and customization
- Documented Mac defaults; punctuation and function keys depend on keyboard layout and hardware.. User bindings, app versions, focused controls and installed extensions can change a command. Inspect the active app menu or its shortcut editor when a listed combination differs.
- Review basis
- Documentation reviewed 2026-11-03 by Codex — primary-documentation and editorial review; no hands-on runtime test. These bindings were not tested in a running app for this guide.
Choose what should become larger
If you are reading a web page or editing a document, first look for that application’s zoom controls. If you need the entire interface enlarged, including controls outside the document, accessibility Zoom is the separate system feature. Changing one does not necessarily change the other or the size of exported document content.
Enable the system feature intentionally
Apple documents keyboard-driven Zoom under Accessibility settings. Turn on the relevant option before expecting its combinations to work. An apparent shortcut failure may simply mean the feature is disabled. Choose a zoom style and magnitude that let you keep track of the pointer and the currently focused area.
Restore the view you meant to change
After magnifying the screen, use the system toggle to return to an overview. After changing a document view, use that app’s own zoom reset or menu controls. When helping someone remotely, explain which layer you changed so they can restore it without altering unrelated accessibility preferences.
