Move Finder items to Trash without skipping the checks
Command-Delete moves the selection to Trash. Shift-Command-Delete starts emptying Trash; inspect its confirmation and contents before proceeding.
- Scope
- Finder · Current vendor documentation checked 3 November 2026; no running-app compatibility test is claimed.
- Keyboard and customization
- Documented Mac defaults; punctuation and function keys depend on keyboard layout and hardware.. User bindings, app versions, focused controls and installed extensions can change a command. Inspect the active app menu or its shortcut editor when a listed combination differs.
- Review basis
- Documentation reviewed 2026-11-03 by Codex — primary-documentation and editorial review; no hands-on runtime test. These bindings were not tested in a running app for this guide.
Verify the selection and its location
Deletion shortcuts operate on selected items, not on the folder name you last read. Check which files are selected before moving them to Trash. During practice, use a clearly named disposable item in a temporary folder rather than a real project, a connected drive or a synchronised working directory.
Keep moving to Trash separate from emptying it
The first action removes selected items from their current location; the second can make recovery substantially harder. Do not learn these as a single rapid sequence. Inspect Trash and any confirmation before emptying, and use the visible Finder menu when you are uncertain about the current keyboard context.
Prefer a deliberate recovery check
If the wrong file was selected, stop and inspect the available restore action before doing more file operations. Undo is context-sensitive and later actions can change what it would undo. This guide intentionally does not recommend the confirmation-bypassing empty-Trash combination as a convenience shortcut.
