Separate entering an item from expanding its outline

Opening a folder changes your browsing location. Expanding a folder in list view reveals its children while keeping the surrounding list available. These two actions can look similar at first, but they are useful for different tasks: entering focuses one location, while expanding helps compare neighbouring branches.

Make the selection visible first

An open command acts on the selected item, which could be a document rather than a folder. That can launch another application. Verify the selected filename and kind before continuing, especially after changing views or returning to a Finder window that has been in the background.

Use list view to learn hierarchy

Open a practice folder containing one nested folder. Expand and collapse that folder, then open it and compare the displayed path. When the distinction is clear, repeat it in a real browsing task. Do not expect the outline arrows to have list-view behaviour when the window is using icons or a gallery.
