Choose parent or history

The parent command follows the folder hierarchy. Back follows the places you visited. Use parent when you need the container; use back when you want to retrace your route.

Keep selection separate from location

Opening a selected item can leave the current folder or launch its associated app. Confirm the selection before opening, especially when you meant only to move up one level.

Try a folder route with two different returns

Start inside Projects/Website/Images, move up to Website, then visit Downloads from Finder’s Go menu. Back returns to Website because that was the previous visited location; parent from Downloads instead moves toward its containing hierarchy. This is why parent and Back can produce different results even though both feel like going backwards. Before moving a selected image, read the current folder path: navigating to a destination has not selected the file you originally meant to move. Keep a separate Finder window open if you need to compare two locations.
