Connect to a server or eject a Finder volume deliberately
Command-K opens Connect to Server. Command-E ejects a selected disk or volume when Finder supports that action.

- Finder · Current vendor documentation checked 3 November 2026; no running-app compatibility test is claimed.
- Keyboard and customization
- Documented Mac defaults; punctuation and function keys depend on keyboard layout and hardware.. User bindings, app versions, focused controls and installed extensions can change a command. Inspect the active app menu or its shortcut editor when a listed combination differs.
- Review basis
- Documentation reviewed 2026-11-03 by Codex — primary-documentation and editorial review; no hands-on runtime test. These bindings were not tested in a running app for this guide.
Treat connection and ejection as separate workflows
A server connection begins by specifying a destination and may require authentication. Ejection ends access to a selected mounted volume. Neither operation is a general-purpose way to refresh Finder. Read the target or selected volume carefully so a keyboard habit does not interrupt the wrong storage device or network location.
Finish work before ejecting
Save and close work that depends on the volume, and wait for active operations to finish. A refusal to eject is useful information: another process may still depend on the storage. Do not interpret the existence of an eject shortcut as a reason to bypass the normal checks or physically disconnect a device while work is in progress.
Use the menu label as confirmation
Select the intended volume in Finder and inspect the File menu’s available eject action. For a server, verify the address in the connection dialog before submitting credentials. If you are practising only the navigation, open the dialog and cancel rather than connecting to an unfamiliar destination.
