Choose the right Finder view from the keyboard
Command-1 through Command-4 select icon, list, column and gallery views in Finder. Pick the view that exposes the information your task needs.
- Scope
- Finder · Current vendor documentation checked 3 November 2026; no running-app compatibility test is claimed.
- Keyboard and customization
- Documented Mac defaults; punctuation and function keys depend on keyboard layout and hardware.. User bindings, app versions, focused controls and installed extensions can change a command. Inspect the active app menu or its shortcut editor when a listed combination differs.
- Review basis
- Documentation reviewed 2026-11-03 by Codex — primary-documentation and editorial review; no hands-on runtime test. These bindings were not tested in a running app for this guide.
Match the view to the question
Icon view helps with recognisable visual items; list view is useful when you want sortable file details; column view exposes neighbouring levels of the hierarchy; gallery view emphasises a larger preview. The shortcuts change presentation, not the identity or contents of the selected files.
Recheck the selected item after switching
A different arrangement can make the same selection appear in an unexpected place. Before opening or acting on it, verify the filename and the current location. View-specific controls and keyboard navigation may also differ, so avoid assuming that an arrow key means exactly the same movement in every presentation.
Compare one folder in all four views
Use a folder containing a few harmless documents and images. Switch views without changing files, and ask which view makes it easiest to find a date, see a parent folder or inspect a visual thumbnail. This exercise turns four numbers into four practical ways to answer different browsing questions.
