Enter data and move between Excel cells on Mac

In Excel for Mac, Return completes an entry and moves forward in the selection. By default, Shift-Return moves up, Tab moves right and Shift-Tab moves left. Escape cancels a cell entry; F2 edits the selected cell.

Decide whether you are moving or editing

The selected cell and the text caret inside a cell are different states. Arrow keys or typed characters can behave differently once editing begins. Use the visible formula bar and caret to identify the state before replacing a value, especially when the cell already contains a formula rather than plain text.

Choose a route that matches the table

For a row of related fields, Tab provides a predictable horizontal path. For a vertical series, Return is the more natural route. A selected range can shape the traversal, so inspect its boundary before a long entry session. Confirm headers and units first; efficient navigation cannot correct data entered into the wrong column. Excel’s editing preferences can change the direction used after Return, so confirm that setting when your movement differs.

Practice cancellation on a harmless value

Use a disposable sheet, select a populated cell, begin editing and cancel with Escape. Then enter two test values using different completion keys and observe the selection. This helps distinguish abandoning an unfinished edit from undoing an edit that was already committed. Avoid testing replacement behavior on a workbook whose original values you cannot restore.
