Practise moving and selecting text accurately
Use a short paragraph of invented text to practise cursor movement, selection and Undo. Check each result instead of trying to finish quickly.
Make a small practice document
Write three lines: a short heading, a punctuated sentence and a longer line that wraps. Choose a destination such as the start of the second word or end of the heading.
Apple documents text-boundary movements, but editors can interpret boundaries differently. Start by moving without selecting, and inspect the insertion point after each movement. If its position is unclear, simplify the sample rather than adding more commands to the sequence. Use invented text that is safe to replace.
Check a selection before typing
- Choose one phrase. Extend the selection and pause to inspect the exact highlighted characters. Replace it with another made-up phrase only after the range matches your intention.
- If punctuation or a wrapped line causes an unexpected selection, reposition and try a smaller movement. The pointer can help establish a clear starting point. This exercise separates cursor position, selected text and the characters typing will replace; it does not require avoiding the mouse or memorizing every boundary command.
Check what Undo restores
Use the editor’s Undo command and inspect how that specific edit is reversed. Verify the restored text rather than assuming the recovery worked.
Do not generalize from a small text edit to deleting files or changing settings. Keep passwords, correspondence and important notes out of the practice document. Move to real writing only with an appropriate backup. A useful session ends with a clear description of the intended movement and what actually happened, even if you learned only one command.
