Take a useful screenshot for a support request
Capture the smallest area that explains the problem. Review the saved image for private details, then include what you expected, what happened and how to reproduce it.

Choose the state the image should show
A useful screenshot can show a missing control, unexpected message or layout issue. Apple supports captures of a screen, selection or window; choose the scope that explains your question with the least unrelated content.
Move private documents, messages and irrelevant menus out of view before capturing. Leave the whole desktop out if it adds nothing. Closing sensitive material is more reliable than hoping that an account name or background detail will be too small for someone else to read.
Inspect the file you will send
- Practise with a harmless interface. Open the saved capture and inspect every edge for account names, document titles or notifications.
- If you crop or redact the image, review the final exported file rather than only the editing canvas. Add a short description of the expected and actual results. That context often makes a smaller screenshot useful and avoids requiring the recipient to infer your intention from a busy desktop image.
Include reproduction details separately
A screenshot shows one visible moment. It may not establish the steps, app version, keyboard layout or timing that produced it. Mention accessibility settings when they affect the appearance.
Include the relevant details in a small reproduction, without passwords, full license keys or personal documents. If the issue concerns animation, explain that a still image does not show the entire interaction. The goal is a clear report another person can investigate, rather than the largest capture your Mac can produce.
