Use Spotlight or switch to an open app?

Quick answer

Use the app switcher to return to an app you already know. Use a search launcher when you need to find or identify the app to open.

Decide whether the destination is known

Returning from a browser to the editor you were just using differs from finding a utility you rarely open. Apple documents separate commands for Spotlight and switching apps.

Choose the route that fits the destination. Do not judge only by the number of keys: a short gesture is unhelpful if it takes you to the wrong place. You can use a different route for each task without committing to one navigation habit for everything.

Compare the two tasks

  1. Choose a browser and a writing app. Move between them while making a short, nonprivate note, then find an unrelated application by name through your usual launcher.
  2. Notice whether you were returning to a known destination or discovering one. Check that you reached the expected app and kept your note intact. You do not need a timer or a new launcher to compare these routes. Keep the exercise practical and use whichever input method makes the destination clearest.

Select the right window separately

An app may have several windows. Arriving in the correct application can still leave the wrong document in view. Identify that as a window-selection task rather than repeatedly cycling through every app.

Use the app’s window navigation as needed. Global search shortcuts can also be customized or claimed by other utilities. If searching or switching behaves unexpectedly, inspect the active app and current key settings before deciding that either navigation method is broken.
