Why a shortcut affects the wrong field
Check which field, editor or panel has focus before changing the binding. A shortcut can be correct but apply somewhere other than the document you are looking at.

Find the active input target
Stop repeating a shortcut that opens the wrong search or changes the wrong area. Look for the focused field, insertion cursor or active panel.
VS Code has separate editors, panels and navigation surfaces, and binding rules can depend on context. A document being visible does not mean it owns keyboard input. Observe the active control before reinstalling extensions or replacing a shortcut that may already be configured correctly.
Reproduce one harmless focus change
- Use a disposable file. Focus the editor, open a search surface, return to the editor, then move to the terminal without running a command. At each step, identify where text would go.
- If the shortcut changes behavior, note the surface and intended action. A report such as “search retained focus after dismissal” is more useful than “the keyboard is broken.” Do not type test strings into a terminal with a live process or a form that could submit real information.
Inspect the binding after checking focus
If the action is still wrong with the expected control focused, inspect its current binding and conditions in the shortcut editor. Extensions and custom keymaps may affect the result.
Change one setting only after isolating the context. Avoid assigning several alternatives and hoping one works. Keep the reproduction small enough for another person to follow, including the editor version and relevant settings. The aim is to identify which layer interpreted the input, rather than find a combination that works only once.
