Keep your place in a long PDF

Quick answer

Record a section heading and page indicator so you can return to the question you were reading. Use page navigation or scrolling as the document requires.

Record a useful reading checkpoint

A checkpoint is easier to use when it describes a question, not just a scroll position. Preview provides page navigation, but a PDF’s printed page numbers may differ from the viewer’s page count.

Write down the topic or heading alongside the page indicator. For example, note that you are checking installation requirements. That is more useful than recording only a page number when several documents have similar formatting or when you return after closing the window.

Compare sections without losing your place

  1. Choose a public sample PDF with two sections you want to compare. Use the viewer’s documented navigation and read enough surrounding text to understand each section.
  2. Use continuous scrolling when it suits a large diagram or the page layout. A shortcut provides another route to the page; it does not require avoiding the trackpad. Keep a short note of the question, then return to the original checkpoint once you have answered it.

Account for PDF layout and text limits

Scanned pages and unusual text layouts can affect search. A failed search does not establish that a phrase is absent, and a viewer page number may not match a printed label.

For a deliverable, inspect the actual layout instead of treating successful navigation as a quality check. Keep private excerpts out of public practice notes. Checkpoints help you resume deliberately; they do not guarantee that every PDF, viewer version or document format behaves identically.
