Practise reading Mac shortcut symbols
Choose a familiar menu command, read its modifier symbols and identify its final key. You can learn the notation without running an unfamiliar action.
On this page
Start with commands you understand
Open an app with ordinary menus. Choose a small set of familiar actions, such as finding text or opening an existing document, and read their full labels.
Use Apple’s symbol guide to match each modifier symbol to its name. This is a recognition exercise, not a reason to try every unusual menu command. Leave power, account, deletion and bulk-edit commands out. Avoid including personal names or recent documents in any screenshot or shared note.
Read one complete binding
- Describe the modifier group and final key in words. Compare that description with the actual menu, including any extra modifier that changes the action.
- If the notation is unclear, check the app’s documentation. Identifying the binding is enough to finish this step; you do not have to execute it. If you choose to try it, use disposable material and inspect the result. Recognizing symbols does not establish that an unfamiliar command is safe for your current work.
Keep only references you need
Write down the action, app and checked binding together. Other keyboard layouts and custom settings may produce different keys for the same action.
Generated images can inspire a visual design, but they are not a source of shortcut mappings. KeyboardShortcuts.pro rows are reference-only: a click highlights the row instead of running its command. Finish when the notation is understandable, rather than when you have collected the longest possible shortcut list.
