Read Mac shortcut symbols on a PC keyboard
Match each Mac modifier symbol to the action your keyboard performs. Printed key labels, physical positions and macOS modifier settings may differ.

Separate symbols from physical keys
Mac menus can show Command, Option, Control and Shift symbols while your external keyboard prints different labels. Apple documents the symbols and modifier-key settings.
Check three things separately: the action the menu requests, the label on your physical key, and the action macOS assigns to it. Do not assume every keyboard has the same arrangement or that its modifier settings are still at their defaults. A previous owner or keyboard utility may have changed them.
Check one command and the modifier settings
- Choose a harmless command in an app you understand. Inspect its current menu binding, then check modifier settings for the keyboard selected in macOS.
- Record the current mapping before changing it. If keys have been intentionally swapped, choose whether to learn that setup or restore the arrangement you prefer. Change only one setting, then test the harmless command again. This is clearer than practising many shortcuts while you are unsure which physical key acts as Command.
Avoid assuming one universal mapping
A symbol legend helps identify modifier names. It cannot cover every firmware layer, remapping tool, remote session or personal configuration.
If you use several machines, note their differences. App bindings and keyboard layouts add further context. Keep destructive commands out of testing and retain a way to restore modifier changes. The result should be a reliable understanding of your keyboard, rather than a claim that one Windows-to-Mac substitution works on every device.
