Why an F-key changes volume instead of running a shortcut
Your top-row key may be acting as a system control instead of a standard function key. Check Fn/Globe behavior and keyboard settings before changing the app’s shortcut.

Check which key mode is active
Apple explains that top-row keys can control hardware features or act as standard function keys. The behavior depends on the keyboard, its settings and how you press the key.
If an app shortcut changes volume or brightness, that points to a system-control layer receiving the input. It does not by itself prove the app removed the command. Read the keyboard’s current configuration before deciding that its displayed F-key binding is wrong.
Test a harmless command
- Choose an action that will not damage work. Compare Apple’s instructions for standard function keys with the behavior of your keyboard.
- If you change the default top-row mode, record the previous setting first. Check both the app action and a system control you use regularly. This lets you see the tradeoff. Avoid debugger, shutdown or other consequential commands while you are still learning which layer receives the top-row key.
Check external keyboard instructions
Non-Apple keyboards may need manufacturer-specific instructions or tools for some function-key behavior. A laptop’s instructions cannot settle every external keyboard issue.
Remote sessions, custom mappings and app settings can add another layer. Start with macOS controls and the keyboard maker’s documentation rather than installing an unfamiliar utility. Once the physical gesture is clear, inspect the app binding separately; function-key settings do not solve every shortcut conflict.
